And then there's the moment Virgin Voyages decides to go there first.

Summer 2028, Valiant Lady becomes the first Lady Ship to sail Scandinavia and the Baltics, homeporting in Amsterdam for a season built from the ground up: 6 sailings in total — 4 brand-new Marvelous Voyages plus 2 Western Europe Crossings — running July 9 through September 4, 2028, with maiden calls at 15 ports across two seas. Every itinerary is new. Every itinerary includes a new port to the fleet. This isn't a region we're adding to the map. It's a map we're drawing for the first time.

Fast facts

Ship & homeport: Valiant Lady · Amsterdam

Season: July 9 – September 4, 2028

Total sailings: 6 (4 new Marvelous Voyages + 2 Western Europe Crossings)

Sailing lengths: 7 nights (Norwegian Fjords; Scandinavia & Hamburg) · 11 nights (Arctic Circle & Norwegian Fjords) · 12 nights (Scandinavia & Stockholm Overnight) · 10 nights each way (Western Europe Crossings)

Maiden ports: 15 — a first for every Sailor, and a first for Virgin Voyages

Overnight stays: Stockholm and Lisbon

Booking: Sailing Club members get 24-hour exclusive access starting Aug. 13, 2026; public booking opens Aug. 14, 2026

Four voyages that build on each other, one region that keeps getting bigger

Take these four back to back, and the season tells its own story. Scandinavia & Stockholm Overnight opens wide — five countries, six ports, the broadest introduction to the region we've built. Norwegian Fjords narrows in — no capitals, no crowds, just four ports that feel genuinely discovered, not just visited. Scandinavia & Hamburg goes back to the cities, but stays late enough to actually live in them. And Arctic Circle & Norwegian Fjords goes further than any of them — literally, to 71°N, for a crossing ceremony we've never had a reason to run before.

Bookending the whole season: two Western Europe Crossings, sailing Barcelona to Amsterdam and Amsterdam to Barcelona, each its own 10-night, port-intensive voyage through Morocco, Portugal, Spain, and France.

Scandinavia & Stockholm Overnight

12 nights · Valiant Lady · Amsterdam · July 19–31, 2028

Five countries, six ports, one overnight — the fullest itinerary in the collection. Oslo for a full day of Scandi cool. Copenhagen for a late stay that turns Tivoli Gardens into an evening instead of an afternoon. Gdańsk (docking in Gdynia) for a medieval Old Town most Sailors have never had a reason to see. Stockholm, overnight, for a golden-hour sail-in through the archipelago and a late-afternoon departure the next day. Berlin, reached by direct train from Warnemünde — dock in Germany, be in Berlin by lunch. And Aarhus to close, Denmark's design-forward answer to Copenhagen.

Norwegian Fjords

7 nights · Valiant Lady · Amsterdam · July 31–August 7, 2028
No capital cities. Just the fjords, done properly. Molde, tucked beneath 222 named mountain peaks, with no cruise crowds and a legendary summer jazz festival. Nordfjordeid, genuinely off the beaten path. Flåm, home to one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world and a fjord approach that's the most photographed moment in the collection. Bergen closes it out — one of the highest-rated ports in the fleet, UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf included.

Scandinavia & Hamburg

7 nights · Valiant Lady · Amsterdam · August 7–14, 2028
Three cities, two late stays, no filler. Oslo for a full day at the Munch Museum and the Opera House rooftop. Copenhagen, late stay, for New Nordic dinner and Tivoli after dark. Hamburg, staying until nearly midnight, for the Elbphilharmonie, the Speicherstadt warehouse district, and a nightlife scene most itineraries never give it credit for.

Arctic Circle & Norwegian Fjords ★

11 nights · Valiant Lady · Amsterdam · August 14–25, 2028
Our marquee sailing of the season. Bergen opens it, then the ship heads north across the Arctic Circle itself — marked onboard with an Arctic Circle Crossing Ceremony, modeled on our equator-crossing Happening, plus a midnight sun deck party under 24-hour daylight. Tromsø brings the Arctic Cathedral and husky farm access. Honningsvåg is the gateway to North Cape, the northernmost point reachable by road in mainland Europe. Trondheim and Åndalsnes — the latter docking beneath near-vertical mountain walls, gateway to Trollstigen and the Rauma Railway — carry the fjords theme north and Olden closes it out.

Western Europe Crossings

10 nights each way · Valiant Lady · Barcelona ⇄ Amsterdam
Two bookend sailings, same route, opposite directions and different personalities. Barcelona → Amsterdam (departs July 9) opens with Casablanca — a full day at the Hassan II Mosque and the medina — then Lisbon, overnight, then La Coruña, gateway to Galicia and the Tower of Hercules, then Cherbourg, an easy day trip from Mont Saint-Michel. Amsterdam → Barcelona (departs August 25) runs it in reverse, swapping Casablanca for a closing call in Tangier.

15 maiden ports, one first-ever region

Every itinerary in this collection includes ports that are new to Virgin Voyages: Oslo, Copenhagen, Gdańsk (Gdynia), Stockholm, Berlin (via Warnemünde), Aarhus, Molde, Nordfjordeid, Flåm, Tromsø, Honningsvåg (North Cape), Trondheim, Åndalsnes, Olden, and Cherbourg. This is the rare release where naming the ports is the news — nowhere on this season has a Virgin Voyages ship been called before.

Two overnights, twice the time to actually be somewhere

Stockholm (Scandinavia & Stockholm Overnight, 12 nights): arrive through the archipelago at golden hour, depart the next afternoon — enough time for the city to stop feeling like a stop.
Lisbon (both Western Europe Crossings): overnight on the outbound — arrive 6pm, depart next day 6pm, full morning included. A crisp port call on the return — 8am to 1pm, enough time to make it count.

Why book early

This season is designed to reward the Sailors who commit first, not the ones who wait for a discount.

Sailing Club: 24-hour exclusive booking access starting Aug. 13, 2026, plus a $100 Bar Tab offer valid for two weeks from launch.

My Next Virgin Voyage (MNVV): placeholder holders get first access and the highest onboard-credit-per-day value in the fleet on this season.

Groups: a $0 deposit hold and price lock mean you can reserve a group's spot on the Arctic Circle sailing — or any of the six — before everyone's calendars line up.

Summer Pass 2028: Sail all four Northern Europe itineraries back-to-back on Valiant Lady — with exclusive perks, an in-cabin welcome package, and VIP access to the Arctic Circle crossing included. Full details at virginvoyages.com/destinations/baltic-cruises.

Public booking opens Aug. 14, 2026, for all six sailings.

It’s true Bordeaux is one of the most fabled and beloved wine regions of the world, and a trip to France to spend time exploring the wineries of Bordeaux is a bucket list trip for many of us.

But ‘Bordeaux’ has another meaning. Translated, it means ‘at the water’s edge.’ And a river cruise may be the most authentic way to honor and live the true essence of the Bordeaux region.

WATCH VIDEO ABOVE:

Favorite scenery, wineries and unexpected modern moments on our Scenic Bordeaux river cruise.

FUN FACT: We talk about Bordeaux river cruises, just as we talk about other river cruises in France like a Rhône River cruise or a Seine River cruise. But there’s no actual Bordeaux river!

Bordeaux is the city that’s the hub of the Bordeaux region, which is a wine region, too. But a river cruise through Bordeaux follows up to three rivers and an estuary draining out into the Atlantic Ocean.

The rivers have shaped the Bordeaux region and its wines, with Left Bank and Right Bank wines featuring distinctive varietals and famous villages like St. Émilion.

The rivers also made possible one of Bordeaux’s most famous wines, Sauternes. A microclimate facilitated by the rivers grows the ‘friendly fungus’ that shrivels up grapes and creates a highly valued, naturally sweet wine that is the classic pairing with French foie gras.

PRO TIP: Not only does a river cruise in Bordeaux have all the best benefits of river cruising: unpacking once and visiting all of the multiple towns, villages, wine appellations, having someone else take care of all the details as you focus on enjoying the shore experiences and luxurious shipboard hospitality…

Other distinct benefits to a Scenic luxury river cruise in Bordeaux include:

You can do all the wine tasting you want, and someone else is doing the driving!

River cruise lines like Scenic can open doors you can’t. In Europe, not all wineries are open to the public like they are here. You may visit wineries you couldn’t access yourself privately.

Scenic brings Bordeaux on board, with local wines, a delightful wine-paired dinner at its private ‘Table de la Rive ’, and offers guests ‘Scenic Enrich’: private, evening events, often after-hours at incredible venues. We were offered two Scenic Enrich events on our 10-day river cruise in Bordeaux. They were wildly different! One in the most magical little chateau you could possibly imagine, and the other in a re-purposed WW2 submarine base!

If it isn’t already, Bordeaux should be on your travel bucket list. Whether you’re a wine lover or not. And for me, a river cruise brings the best of Bordeaux to life. Sante!

START YOUR TRIP!

Video and story by: Lynn Elmhirst, cruise/ travel journalist and expert

All rights reserved. I have some favorites.

By: Lynn Elmhirst, travel journalist and expert

Some like it hot! And since Coco Chanel made it stylish to spend even scorching summers on the French Riviera, heat-loving travelers have flocked to the Mediterranean during the season. Those who couldn’t brave Mediterranean heat? Well, they stayed in more central areas of Europe in the summers.

That’s been the pattern for decades – but it is changing fast.

An early summer heatwave in 2026 shattered records across parts of Europe, making many top summer travel hotspots: London, Paris, Amsterdam - even Vienna and alpine Switzerland - feel like the high summer in the Med.

Mediterranean destinations are designed for the heat, with thick walls, shutters and even afternoon siesta habits – helping residents and visitors stay comfortable. In places north of the Med, it’s a much different story.

That makes one of the ‘hottest’ trends in travel today: the ‘coolcation.’ And there are my favorite places to travel in the summer - without breaking a sweat!

Pro Tip: consider cruising. Not only are these destinations best explored by coastal cruising, but it’s also always a bit cooler over water, and there’s always a breeze at sea!

SCANDINAVIA

Even more southern parts of Scandinavia and their capitals, like Copenhagen, are feeling the heat. To truly escape the climate, go even farther north. A coastal cruise up the fjords of Norway is one of the iconic, bucket list cruises with some of the most inspiring scenery and charming Scandinavian villages. Some cruises will take you far enough north to actually be Arctic – where you have the chance of even spotting polar bears!

(Top photo: Viking Cruises ship in Geiranger Fjord, Norway, courtesy of Viking)

SCOTTISH ISLES

Channel your inner Highlander along the windswept, rocky shores of Scotland’s Shetland Isles or any of its other islands. Discover ancient stone structures, cozy inns, shops and pubs, and unforgettable puffin encounters. Not to mention the isles’ trifecta of farm animals: rugged sheep, adorable Highland cows and coiffure-challenged Shetland ponies! I think the purchase of a piece of tartan or a Highland wool scarf may be mandatory!

ICELAND

The ‘land of fire and ice’ does not disappoint, from geysers and glaciers and volcanoes and one-of-a-kind wild scenery, to Icelandic ponies and quirky local food like sheep hotdogs and fermented shark. You’ll want to tour the ‘Golden Circle’ of scenic points outside of Reykjavik and catch a performance in the capital’s stunning harborfront music hall, covered in reflective ‘scales’ that mirror the water.

GREENLAND

The sleeping giant of Arctic travel destinations. Greenland is a giant icecap, with edges of the coast inhabited by small communities and some of the most spectacular polar scenery: towering cliffs and fjords, glaciers and icebergs. Capital city Nuuk now has an airport and public art installations throughout its charming, part-Arctic, part-Scandinavian streetscape by the sea.

NEWFOUNDLAND

Newfoundland is more than the vast scenery of Gros Morne National Park, or the archeological remains of Viking settlements that long pre-date Christopher Columbus. It’s a cultural treasure. You haven’t really lived until you’ve been ‘screeched in’ as an honorary Newfoundlander in a pub in St. John’s, with local Irish seafarer-inspired bands playing in the background. You’ll have to kiss a cod fish and down a shot of the local ‘screech’ – rum which is nowadays a lot smoother than its original version! And you’ll never meet a Newfoundlander who can’t sing or tell you a tall tale!

ALASKA

And since we’re talking cruising, I have to point out one of the most accessible coolcation destinations in our own back yard. Cruises to Alaska just keep growing in popularity, and why not? It’s the perfect multi-generational destination, where everyone in the family finds something to love: spotting bald eagles and bears, otters and whales, glaciers and icebergs, and vast forests. And tasting local crab right out of the crab pots.

But there’s a catch: Alaska’s getting warmer summers, too. Although Alaskan ‘heatwaves’ aren’t nearly at Mediterranean levels, interior cities especially, like Fairbanks, can hit temperatures even over 95 degrees (35 C)! Especially with the ‘white nights’ where the sun is out 20 or more hours a day, this prevents nighttime cooling relief. Nonetheless, coastal areas remain cooled by sea breezes and Alaska cruises remain an easy way to experience the scenery and communities of America’s Last Frontier.

START YOUR (COOL!) That sets Crystal apart from most other cruise lines in the luxury space, which either permit but provide few age-specific amenities – or simply ban a younger passenger set.

Not so Crystal Grace. Existing ships Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity have a playroom for kids 3-12, a lounge and video arcade for teens and outdoors, and children share the main Seahorse Pool deck with adults.

The first new ocean ship for Crystal in a quarter of a century takes a leap forward, accommodating the growing trend towards multi-generational travel, including in the luxury cruise space.

All clustered together on Deck 11, while the adults’ main Seahorse pool is a deck below on Deck 10, new, enhanced family-focused spaces create a family ‘hub.’ That keeps kid energy in one location and ensures everyone, including the youngest members of the family, feels they have a cruise holiday designed just for them.

A New Outdoor Destination for Families

The biggest difference between existing Crystal ships and the new ship is the all-new, dedicated kids’ pool area on Deck 11.

With a shallow pool, outdoor recreational games and comfortable areas for families to spend time together in a safe and welcoming environment, the new space lets kids be kids and maintains the sophisticated, Crystal aesthetic and atmosphere fans have grown to love. It’s a whole deck away from the main Seahorse pool for adults on Deck 10.

Fantasia Playroom – Ages 3-12

Also on Deck 11, a reimagined, modern children’s playroom offers structured, drop-off programming, supervised activities primarily during peak family travel windows (such as summer months and holiday seasons).

Young children can learn, create, play, and make new friends while parents get to enjoy grown-up experiences elsewhere on the ship.

Plus, the highly rated private in-room and fee-based babysitting services will continue on Crystal Grace.

Waves Teen Center – Ages 13-17

Across the way from Fantasia, the all-new Waves Teen Center is the largest teen space in Crystal's fleet.

The new venue features a larger entertainment lounge complete with an oversized screen for gaming, movies and group activities, card and board game areas, and a music and dance space featuring a sound system and dance floor.

The teen program will operate daily with dedicated programming and activities during peak family travel periods, including summer months and the holiday season.

New Outdoor Spaces for Grown-ups: Seahorse Pool, Private Cabanas and Pool Bar

At the heart of Crystal Grace's outdoor spaces is the Seahorse Pool, the largest pool in the Crystal fleet. Spanning the center of Deck 10, the expansive pool area will feature 140 loungers between Deck 10 and 11 for the 650 guests on board.

The new pool area features a large outdoor LED screen as a focal point throughout the day and evening, hosting everything from live sporting events and destination programming to movie nights under the stars.

For the first time, Crystal Grace will introduce a collection of 60 private, first-come, first-served cabanas on Deck 11 overlooking the Seahorse Pool.

Crystal Grace will also feature a new poolside bar, a stylish setting to enjoy cocktails, conversation and panoramic ocean views. (Crystal Serenity is being outfitted with a similar poolside bar during her upcoming drydock.)

START YOUR TRIP!

Images/ renderings courtesy of Crystal Cruises

All rights reserved. Summer is also Spain’s festival season – with two events famous the world over headlining a heady, heated frenzy of cultural celebrations. And only in Spain would they treat death-defying dares - and a food fight - equally seriously!

I Call “Bull”

Every July 6, the northern city of Pamplona erupts with the 9-day San Fermín Festival. Literary lovers will recall that Ernest Hemingway made the Running of the Bulls world-famous in The Sun Also Rises. But the morning encierro is only one event in a much larger festival filled with parades, music, dancing, giant puppets, fireworks and Basque traditions.

Each morning at 8 a.m., hundreds of runners dressed in white with red scarves sprint just under half a mile alongside six bulls through the city's narrow streets toward the bullring. The run lasts only two to four minutes—but has become one of the world's most recognizable festival traditions.

Many visitors wisely choose to watch from balconies or behind protective barriers rather than participate.

Should Tourists Run—or Watch?

The encierro is not a recreational race or an organized tourist activity – and not for the faint of heart! Are you physically fit, completely sober and fully aware of the risks? Even if you answer ‘yes’ to all those questions, watching is still strongly advised. Even though it’s forbidden to touch or provoke the bulls, participants can be trampled, gored or caught in dangerous crowd pileups, and injuries occur every year.

Tomato Time

Just seven weeks later, when the tomatoes are at their ripest, the time is ripe for another small Spanish town to dominate global travel and social media headlines. But not for its cuisine.

On the last Wednesday of August, Buñol, near Valencia, hosts La Tomatina, the world's largest food fight. Thousands of participants - wearing old clothes and, in a sensible twist in recent years, swimming goggles - gather as truckloads of overripe tomatoes are delivered to the town square.

And just like that, over a quarter of a million pounds of tomatoes become ammunition. Like the messiest snowball fight you can imagine, everyone in the square is fair game.

As iconic as La Tomatina is, the tradition dates only to 1945, reportedly after an argument escalated into a spontaneous tomato fight using produce from a nearby market stall.

Today it's a carefully organized event with attendance capped by advance ticket sales. And it’s a bit more vegetarian-friendly than the Running of the Bulls!

Wind up your throwing arm… or watch?

Unlike the dangers of the Running of the Bulls, La Tomatina is tame by comparison! And visitors account for a large share of the crowd prepared to risk tomato stains on your clothing to say you’ve participated in the food fight to end all food fights.

In fact, even if you’re hoping to only watch, if you’re in the neighborhood, you’re still likely to end up part of the mess!

Worth Planning a Trip Around

Summer in Spain has no shortage of sunshine and beaches. But if you want to have stories you’ll be telling long after your tan fades, it's hard to beat a country where you can dodge bulls and vegetables in organized festivals every summer.

START YOUR TRIP!

Images: Getty

All rights reserved. This One Creates Memories.

Savor What’s Next: Why we Can’t Wait to Experience the New Dining & Bar Venues on Norwegian Aura™

Having sailed on Norwegian Prima®, Norwegian Viva®, Norwegian Aqua® and Norwegian Luna®, we’ve come to appreciate what makes the Prima Class so special. From the stunning outdoor spaces to the elevated dining experiences and beautifully designed lounges, these ships changed the way I think about cruising. They feel modern, sophisticated, and intentionally designed around how people want to vacation.

That’s why we are especially excited about Norwegian Aura™.

As much as we loved the dining and bar experiences aboard the previous Prima Class ships, Norwegian Aura is taking things a step further with new culinary concepts and reimagined venues that promise to make the onboard experience even more memorable. For someone who loves discovering new restaurants while traveling, the food and beverage innovations coming to Aura are what I’m most looking forward to.

The first venue on our must-visit list is Tamara, an all-new specialty restaurant inspired by the rich flavors and traditions of Indian cuisine. Norwegian Cruise Line has long been known for offering a variety of international dining experiences, but Tamara feels like an exciting evolution. The opportunity to enjoy bold spices, authentic dishes, and immersive flavors while sailing to incredible destinations sounds like exactly the kind of experience that turns a great vacation into an unforgettable one. Whether you’re already a fan of Indian cuisine or simply enjoy trying something new, Tamara seems destined to become one of those restaurants guests talk about long after their cruise ends.

We are also fascinated by the introduction of The Lookout, a brand-new bar concept that feels perfectly suited for the Prima Class lifestyle. One of my favorite memories from previous Prima Class sailings was finding the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail while watching the ocean drift by. The Lookout appears to build on that experience, offering elevated views and a vibrant atmosphere where guests can gather throughout the day and into the evening. Whether it’s a refreshing drink after an afternoon by the pool or a sunset cocktail before dinner, it sounds like the kind of venue that effortlessly becomes part of your daily routine onboard.

What excites us most is how these new venues continue the Prima Class philosophy of blending beautiful design with meaningful experiences. The ships have never been about simply adding more restaurants or bars; they are about creating spaces where travelers connect, celebrate, and make memories. Every venue feels thoughtfully designed to encourage those spontaneous vacation moments, meeting new friends over drinks, lingering a little longer over dessert, or discovering a new favorite dish you never expected to love.

Another change we are eager to see firsthand is the reimagined Commodore Room. The refreshed Commodore Room promises a more contemporary atmosphere with interactive screens while maintaining the warm service and inviting ambiance that have made it a longtime guest favorite. It sounds like the perfect place for everything from a celebratory dinner to a leisurely meal with family and friends.

We spend a lot of time thinking about travel experiences and believe food is one of the most powerful ways we connect with a destination and with each other. Some of our favorite vacation memories aren’t tied to a particular landmark or excursion. They’re tied to a meal we didn’t expect to love, a conversation that lasted longer than planned, or a toast shared while watching the sunset. That’s why the dining and bar innovations on Norwegian Aura resonate so much. They’re not just new venues; they’re opportunities to create those memorable moments. \

What’s particularly exciting is that Norwegian Aura seems to strike a balance between introducing fresh concepts and enhancing what guests already love about the Prima Class. Returning cruisers will find familiar elements that made Prima, Viva, Aqua and Luna stand out, while also discovering experiences that feel entirely new. That combination of comfort and discovery is one of the reasons we keep coming back to Norwegian ships.

And from everything we know so far, the food and beverage program aboard Aura is poised to become one of the ship’s biggest highlights. Between the bold flavors of Tamara, the social energy of The Lookout, and the refreshed elegance of the Commodore Room, there will be countless opportunities to explore, indulge, and celebrate throughout the voyage. For travelers who believe the journey should be every bit as memorable as the destination, Norwegian Aura offers plenty to look forward to.

On board, guests can continue their journey with regionally inspired menus, Italian specialties at Sabatini’s℠ Italian Trattoria and the cool, creamy treat of authentic gelato.

Is it time to set sail for a taste of history and culture?

Baltic & Scandinavia: Nordic magic and natural marvels

Embark on a journey to a part of the world where Viking legends meet sleek Scandinavian design — and where ancient landscapes shimmer under the midnight sun.

In Norway, cruise through deep-blue fjords flanked by enchanting waterfalls and majestic mountains. Visit Iceland’s geothermal springs, stroll the streets of Copenhagen or seek the Northern Lights from above the Arctic Circle. Every port offers a chance to dive into local lore, from medieval castles to tales of Norse gods.

Princess pairs these extraordinary destinations with seamless travel and enriching onboard experiences. Whether you're relaxing in the Lotus Spa® after a day of exploring or listening to Viking history told by regional experts, you'll feel the magic long after the ship sails on.

Where will your curiosity carry you next?

The British Isles: castles, cliffs and centuries of history

Few places blend charm, legends and storybook scenery quite like the British Isles. Here, ancient ruins, royal landmarks and poetic countrysides combine into an itinerary filled with delight and discovery.

Stroll the cobbled Royal Mile in Edinburgh, stand in awe before mysterious Stonehenge or sip tea in a thatched-roof village. In Ireland, explore the striking Cliffs of Moher, visit lively pubs filled with traditional music or search for Nessie along the banks of Loch Ness.

Whether you're interested in literary history, royal palaces or wild coastlines, Princess connects you to it all with thoughtfully curated excursions. On board, continue the experience with British-style pub lunches, hearty comfort food and live music.

Are you ready for your next story to begin?

Caribbean: a splash of sun, sand and spice

If you dream of turquoise waters, warm white sands, palm-lined beaches and laid-back vibes, the Caribbean is calling. Princess offers itineraries across the Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean, each packed with vibrant culture and postcard-perfect moments.

Go snorkeling in Cozumel, explore Mayan ruins in Belize or zipline through the rainforest in St. Lucia. Prefer a slower pace? Lounge on pristine beaches in Aruba, explore history and architecture in San Juan or sip rum cocktails on a catamaran in Antigua.

Even before you arrive, the island spirit comes alive on board. Think: steel drum bands, tropical flavors and cultural programming that bring local art, cuisine and storytelling to life.

No matter the destination, Princess makes every sailing unforgettable, with award-winning excursions, Broadway-style entertainment, rejuvenating spas, enrichment programs, expert-led insights and dining options to satisfy every taste — from the best pizza at sea to multicourse, multisensory dining experiences. Every moment on your cruise is crafted for connection, discovery and relaxation.

The world is at your doorstep. Many countries in the region are consistently top vacation spots, yet with thousands of islands, there is still much left to explore. Now more than ever, we want to visit less crowded and more secluded destinations. Everyone loves Punta Cana, Varadero and Cancún, but the real hidden gems are often in unexpected places.

Aruba

The first of the ABC islands is a must for any foodie—Aruba restaurants are among the best in the Caribbean.

Start your culinary journey in the restaurant-heavy town Savaneta. For the freshest seafood imaginable, beachside favourites Flying Fishbone and Zeerovers are right on the water.

Head to the southern tip of the island for a curry lunch at Kamini's Kitchen, followed by coconut ice cream served right out of the husk. This spot is near Baby Beach, named for its kid-friendly shallow and calm waters.

Every cuisine has a half-moon pocket of flavour. In Poland, it’s perogies, Japan’s got gyoza, South America: empanadas. Aruba has pastechis, deep-fried dough stuffed with either lobster, veggies, beef or more. Locals swear by The Pastechi House in Oranjestad.

Always order Pan Bati; a flatbread to dip in stews, soups or anything really. Once you’re carbed up, enjoy Aruba’s snorkelling, kayaking and windsurfing. Or, hike to see cave drawings in Arikok National Park!

Antigua

Some say when you look at an Antigua map, the outline of the island looks like a heart. Whether you see it or not, there’s plenty to love about this spot—the perfect destination for the sporty traveller.

Sailing enthusiasts will find Antigua weather perfect for their passion, and those wanting to race should book in the spring for Sailing Week. There’s also a mentorship program dedicated to encouraging girls and women to master the often male-dominated sport.

Antigua golf courses are both challenging and rewarding. Tee off with a view of the sea at Cedar Valley Golf Club, where the famous cricketer Sir Viv Richards is a member and often seen on weekends.

For even more outdoor fun, visit Half Moon Bay. This lunar-shaped wonder is one of those things you have to see to believe. Trek to the remote and isolated Rendezvous Bay, which is as secretive as its name suggests.

Barbados

Rihanna hails from Barbados and we’ve got love on the brain when we think about this lush island. A romantic spot, Barbados luxury resorts are the perfect locale for a wedding, honeymoon or just a getaway with bae. Single travellers will find that the Barbados nightlife offers plenty of opportunities to flam (that’s Bajan for “to flirt”).

Date night in paradise looks like sharing local delicacies such as flying fish and cou cou at Barbados restaurants. Or, an open-air fish fry in Oistins for fresh marlin, tuna and snapper to enjoy and live music to dance to together.

If your sweetheart is more adventure-minded, there’s plenty of Barbados hiking. Trek through the rainforest at Welchman Hall Gully to see protected monkeys in their natural habitat. Or, descend down into Animal Flower Cave and swim in the natural rock pools.

Curaçao

Curaçao liqueur is a bold, shocking colour and tastes both bitter and sweet. You’ll find its namesake is as dynamic as the drink. If you ever indulge in too much of the blue stuff, try the national dish Keshi Yeni—basically a ball of cheese stuffed with meat.

You’ve definitely seen the candylike buildings along the waterfront in Willemstad. The postcard-perfect capital city is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Curaçao's thriving music scene gave the world tumba, a genre named for the distinct drums central to it. Ritmo Kombina (“combined rhythm”) is a modern take that’s gaining popularity. Check out a show at Club Mangoes and see what the hype is all about.

While small, Curaçao has over 35 beaches. Favourites include Cas Abao, named one of the 21 Best Beaches by National Geographic, and tiny Playa Kenepa that has the best snorkelling in Curaçao.

Grenada

Scuba diving and snorkelling enthusiasts need not look farther than the mysterious waters of Grenada. Several shipwrecks are hidden among coral reefs, including the massive Bianca C, known as the Titanic of the Caribbean. Art and adventure intersect at Grenada’s underwater sculpture garden, the first of its kind in the world.

Above the surface, the best beach to beat the crowds is the remote Bathway Beach. For a once in a lifetime escape, take a boat to the island Carriacou and hike to the secluded Anse la Roche beach.

Grenada is often synonymous with spices, which are the country’s main export and what its yearly carnival Spicemas is named for. Spice up your life with the national dish oil down, a stew that gets its golden hue from turmeric, then try nutmeg ice cream for dessert.

Saint Lucia

A nature lover’s paradise, Saint Lucia excursions include ziplining through the island’s jungle. The rainforest here is home to the rarest snake on earth, the non-venomous Saint Lucia racer. If you’re really lucky you might spot one of 20 left in the wild.

Saint Lucia has two mountainous volcanic plugs, known as The Pitons. Their names might lead you to believe differently, but Petit Piton is higher and a lot harder to hike than its neighbour, Gros Piton. The latter has several trails and stairs, whereas Petit Piton is steep, unmarked and reserved only for climbing experts. Whatever your skill level, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views at the summit of both and will have earned a soak in the volcanic mud baths of Soufrière.

The best beaches in Saint Lucia are the ones where you can watch a live sea turtle hatching, like Grand Anse beach.

Santo Domingo

History fanatics will find their haven in Santo Domingo, the oldest city in the Caribbean. The capital of the Dominican Republic is the country’s cultural hub and offers an immersive experience for those passionate about the arts.

Start at the Museum of the Royal Houses. This palace was built in 1511 to house the Spanish government. Now, it’s a museum dedicated to the customs and life of the colony. Skip the line and do a self-guided tour with audio in several languages.

Down the street you’ll see the mighty Reloj de Sol (sundial) which was the first official clock in North America. It still tells the time!

Grab a coffee or cocktail at nearby Mamey Librería Café. It’s easy to spend an afternoon in this plant-filled bookstore, gallery, cinema and restaurant. Browse rare books and enjoy the gorgeous terrace. We recommend the croquettes with passionfruit jam and a cold brew to wash them down.

Turks & Caicos

If relaxation is your primary goal, then the sparsely populated islands of Turks & Caicos are calling. With all of the country’s calm, you’ll find no shortage of things to do in Turks & Caicos.

Forget the world at beautiful Grace Bay Beach, a 19km stretch of soft white sand and clear turquoise water on Providenciales island, or Provo. Long Bay Beach is where you’ll find the best kiteboarding in Turks & Caicos.

Provo has charter companies for big-game, deep-sea fishing. If on North Caicos or South Caicos, try bonefishing at Caicos Banks, the marine plateau that connects the archipelago. If you don’t feel like cooking your catch, many restaurants will do it for you. We like Omar’s Beach Hut!

The small island Grand Turk is home to the capital, Cockburn Town. This storybook-like setting has pastel houses and wild horses that roam the streets. Seeing them in nature might inspire you to take a riding lesson on the beach.

From Italy's historic cities to France's celebrated cuisine, it's easy to see why. But once you've wandered the cobblestone streets, admired the famous landmarks, and checked off the classics, a new question often emerges:

What's next? Increasingly, the answer is South America.

From the ancient mysteries of Machu Picchu to the breathtaking glaciers of Patagonia and the extraordinary wildlife of the Galápagos Islands, South America offers an incredible variety of experiences in a single journey. It's a destination where cosmopolitan cities, rich cultural traditions, dramatic landscapes, and once-in-a-lifetime moments come together in ways few places can match.

A Continent of Contrasts

One of the most exciting aspects of South America is its remarkable diversity. In a single trip, travelers can move from vibrant urban centers like Buenos Aires and Santiago to remote mountain valleys, ancient archaeological sites, and some of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. The contrast is part of the appeal.

You might spend one day exploring colonial architecture and local markets, then find yourself standing before a massive glacier or hiking through breathtaking national parks the next.

It's this combination of culture, history, and raw natural beauty that makes South America feel both immersive and transformational.

Why Travelers Are Choosing Meaningful Journeys

Travel priorities have evolved in recent years. Instead of fitting in as many trips as possible, many travelers are choosing fewer vacations that deliver deeper experiences and more lasting memories.

That's one reason destinations like Peru and Patagonia are seeing growing interest. These places offer the kind of unforgettable moments that travelers dream about for years before experiencing them in person. Whether it's seeing the sun rise over Machu Picchu or watching chunks of ancient ice break away from a Patagonian glacier, South America delivers experiences that make you stop and appreciate where you are.

The famous "I can't believe I'm here" moments have become more valuable than ever.

Peru: History, Culture, and Wonder

When people think of Peru, Machu Picchu usually comes to mind first. And for good reason.
The legendary Incan citadel remains one of the world's most iconic travel experiences. Yet what often surprises visitors is how much more Peru has to offer.

The country is a fascinating blend of ancient civilizations, Indigenous heritage, vibrant traditions, colorful cities, and exceptional cuisine. Visitors can explore the Sacred Valley, discover centuries of history in Cusco, and experience local customs that continue to thrive today.

Of course, Machu Picchu remains the crown jewel. Watching the morning mist slowly lift from the mountaintop ruins is a moment that exceeds even the highest expectations. It's not simply a beautiful view. It's an emotional experience that connects travelers to a remarkable chapter of human history.

Patagonia: Nature on a Grand Scale

If Peru captivates through culture and history, Patagonia astonishes through nature. Stretching across southern Chile and Argentina, Patagonia is famous for its towering glaciers, rugged mountains, pristine lakes, and vast wilderness.

Photos rarely prepare travelers for the true scale of the region. In places like Torres del Paine National Park, soaring peaks rise dramatically above turquoise lakes and windswept landscapes. Massive glaciers stretch across the horizon, while fjords and remote waterways create scenes that feel almost untouched by time.

For many visitors, one of the most memorable moments is standing before a glacier and hearing the unmistakable crack of ice calving into the water below.

It's a powerful reminder of nature's grandeur and one that stays with travelers long after they return home.

Ecuador and the Galápagos: A Hidden Gem Combination

While Peru and Patagonia often receive the spotlight, Ecuador remains one of South America's most rewarding destinations.

Compact yet incredibly diverse, Ecuador delivers a remarkable range of experiences without the long travel times sometimes required elsewhere on the continent. Visitors can explore Quito's beautifully preserved historic center, journey through the Andes Mountains, browse Indigenous markets, and enjoy authentic local cuisine, all within a relatively easy-paced itinerary.

And then comes the grand finale: the Galápagos Islands. For many travelers, the Galápagos transforms an already memorable trip into something truly extraordinary. Here, wildlife encounters happen up close and in their natural environment. Giant tortoises roam freely, marine iguanas bask on volcanic shorelines, and blue-footed boobies perform their famous mating dances just feet from visitors.

Exploring the islands by small ship offers access to remote landing sites and unique ecosystems that simply can't be experienced elsewhere.

Combined with Ecuador's rich cultural experiences, the Galápagos creates one of the most rewarding travel combinations in the world.

Globus Makes Traveling to South America Easier Than You Think

Some travelers assume South America is complicated to navigate because of its geography, multiple countries, varying elevations, and language differences.

In reality, Globus removes much of that complexity. Intra-vacation flights, hotel stays, sightseeing, transportation, and expert guidance from Tour Directors and Local Guides are thoughtfully arranged, allowing travelers to focus on enjoying the experience rather than managing logistics.

What many expect to be a challenging adventure often becomes an exceptionally comfortable and rewarding journey.

The Perfect Choice for Experienced Travelers

South America is attracting a wide range of travelers, but it holds particular appeal for those who have already explored many of Europe's marquee destinations. The region offers familiar comforts paired with fresh discoveries.
Travelers who enjoy guided journeys appreciate having expert local guides, carefully planned itineraries, and seamless travel arrangements while still experiencing destinations that feel excitingly new.

It's especially appealing to:

Experienced travelers looking for something beyond Europe

Active travelers who enjoy exploration and scenic landscapes

Culture enthusiasts seeking meaningful local connections

Travelers celebrating milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and retirement adventures

Anyone searching for a true bucket-list experience

For many, South America feels like the natural next chapter in their travel story.

While some travelers love the freedom of planning every detail themselves, others prefer the ease of having accommodations, transportation and sightseeing taken care of. If you've been looking for something that combines expert planning with a more personal travel experience, it may be time to consider a Small Group Tour.

Unlike traditional group travel, Trafalgar's Small Group Tours are limited to a maximum of just 18 guests. With fewer travelers, you'll enjoy a more relaxed pace, meaningful local experiences and the opportunity to discover destinations in a way that feels both comfortable and immersive.

Not sure if Small Group travel is right for you? Here are eight signs it might be your perfect match.

1. You Want Someone Else to Handle the Planning

Planning a vacation can be exciting, but researching hotels, transportation, restaurants and sightseeing quickly becomes overwhelming.

A Small Group Tour takes care of the logistics while still giving you the freedom to enjoy the journey. Your accommodations, transportation, many meals and sightseeing are arranged in advance, allowing you to focus on experiencing the destination instead of managing the details.

2. You Love Meeting Local People

Some of the most memorable travel moments happen through the people you meet.

On Trafalgar Small Group Tours, you'll enjoy experiences that introduce you to local hosts, families and artisans who share their traditions, stories and way of life. Whether you're grilling fresh seafood with a Basque family, learning about traditional tea culture in Beijing or enjoying a home-cooked meal in Patagonia, these personal encounters create lasting memories that go far beyond sightseeing.

3. You Prefer Quality Over Quantity

Travel isn't about checking every landmark off a list. Sometimes spending more time in fewer places creates a richer experience.

With a smaller group, there's more flexibility to slow down, ask questions and truly appreciate each destination. Instead of rushing from one attraction to the next, you'll have opportunities to explore charming neighborhoods, discover local cafés and enjoy the atmosphere that makes every place unique.

4. You Enjoy Sharing Experiences Without Feeling Crowded

One of the greatest joys of travel is sharing unforgettable moments with others. Smaller groups make those moments feel more natural.

With no more than 18 guests, conversations happen more easily, friendships develop naturally and the overall atmosphere feels relaxed rather than rushed. You'll travel with like-minded explorers while still having plenty of personal space throughout the journey.

5. Food Is One of the Reasons You Travel

For many travelers, discovering local cuisine is just as exciting as visiting famous landmarks.

Small Group Tours include experiences that connect you with the flavors behind each destination. Enjoy regional wines in Tuscany, local honey in Nafplion or artisanal chocolate in San Isidro de Heredia. These moments offer more than a taste of local cuisine. They provide a deeper connection to the traditions, people and culture that make each destination unique.

6. You Want to Go Beyond the Guidebook

The world's most famous attractions deserve their reputation, but some of the best travel experiences happen away from the crowds.

From walking through medieval villages and exploring quiet coastal towns to visiting working farms and conservation centers, Trafalgar's Small Group Tours combine iconic highlights with hidden gems that help you experience destinations from a different perspective.

7. You Appreciate Learning From Local Experts

Every destination has stories that bring its history, culture and traditions to life.

Throughout your journey, knowledgeable Travel Directors and Local Specialists share insights you simply wouldn't discover on your own. Whether you're exploring historic cities, learning about regional customs or uncovering local legends, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the places you visit.

8. You Want Travel to Feel More Meaningful

Today's travelers are looking for experiences that create lasting memories while supporting local communities.

Every Trafalgar Small Group Tour includes signature Be My Guest and MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences that connect you with local people, celebrate regional traditions and support initiatives that have a positive impact on the places you visit. These experiences allow you to travel more thoughtfully while creating genuine connections along the way.

Discover a More Personal Way to Travel

Whether you're dreaming of exploring Portugal's wine country, spotting wildlife in Costa Rica, discovering the rainforests of Borneo or wandering through the villages of Tuscany, Trafalgar's Small Group Tours offer a different way to experience the world.

With expert guidance, carefully planned itineraries and a maximum of just 18 guests, every journey is designed to help you connect more deeply with the people, places and cultures that make each destination unique.

If these signs sound familiar, it may be time to experience the difference for yourself.
