Sailing to Alaska with Oceania Cruises

Exploring Alaska in Luxury: My Journey Aboard Oceania Riviera

Alaska has a way of making you feel small in the best possible way — towering glaciers, endless spruce forests, and wildlife that appears when you least expect it. On my recent journey aboard Oceania Riviera, I experienced Alaska in a way that blended rugged adventure with refined luxury. If you’re dreaming of an Alaska cruise that offers elevated cuisine, intimate service, and immersive port experiences, this sailing deserves a place at the top of your list.

Why Alaska Continues to Captivate Travelers

Alaska is one of those destinations that feels both untouched and welcoming. Travelers come for the glaciers, fjords, wildlife, and small‑town charm — but they return because Alaska has a way of grounding you. It’s a destination where every day brings a new postcard moment.

On this voyage, we explored iconic ports like Ketchikan, Sitka, Wrangell and (unfortunately we missed Haines due to weather), each offering its own blend of culture, nature, and adventure.

Life Onboard Oceania Riviera

Oceania Riviera is known for its culinary excellence, boutique size, and warm, personalized service, and this Alaska sailing showcased all of it.

Luxurious Staterooms Onboard Oceania Riviera

One of the standout features of Oceania Riviera is its exceptionally luxurious staterooms — a true sanctuary after a day of exploring Alaska’s rugged beauty. The accommodations feel more like a boutique hotel than a cruise cabin, with thoughtful touches such as plush bedding, spacious bathrooms, and elegant furnishings that elevate the entire experience. Many staterooms offer private verandas, perfect for sipping morning coffee while watching mist roll over the Inside Passage or catching a glimpse of wildlife right from your balcony. The attention to detail is unmistakable, creating a warm, refined retreat that enhances the sense of relaxed luxury Oceania is known for.

A Ship Designed for Food Lovers

Oceania’s reputation for “The Finest Cuisine at Sea” is well earned. From the lobster bisque or French Onion soup at Jacques to the made‑to‑order pastas at Toscana, every meal felt intentional and beautifully crafted. Even the Terrace Café — often a casual stop — delivered elevated dishes with sweeping views of the Inside Passage.

Relaxed Luxury at Sea

Riviera’s atmosphere is refined without ever feeling formal. Guests enjoy spacious staterooms, attentive staff, and quiet corners perfect for reading, sipping wine, or simply watching the coastline drift by. The Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center was a highlight, offering wellness experiences that paired perfectly with the serenity of Alaska’s landscapes.  The thermal beds in a quiet relaxing zen space are sure to be a favorite hidden gem.

Port Highlights: Alaska’s Best in One Sailing

Sitka: Wildlife & Culture

Sitka blends Russian history with rich Indigenous culture. A wildlife cruise here brought us face‑to‑face with sea otters, bald eagles, and even a few humpback whales.

Ketchikan & Ward Cove: The Salmon Capital

Ketchikan’s colorful boardwalks and totem poles make it one of Alaska’s most charming ports. The Misty Fjords flightseeing excursion is a must for travelers seeking dramatic scenery.  Oceania docks in Ward Cove, which has converted an old mill into a great spot for shopping and for the tours to pick up.   Visit the famous Creek Street and learn about the history, head to a salmon bake or take in some of the local shops.

Wrangell: Deeply Authentic

Sailing into Wrangell you embark on a crowd free frontier town.  No street lights, I'm not sure there were even stop signs.

Just friendly locals eager to share their stories with you.  From the Granite mines, to the Jetboat tours - there is something for everyone.

Who This Cruise Is Perfect For

This Oceania Riviera Alaska sailing is ideal for:

  • Travelers seeking luxury without formality
  • Food lovers who appreciate elevated dining
  • Couples and solo travelers wanting a boutique ship experience

Final Thoughts: Alaska in a Whole New Light

My journey aboard Oceania Riviera reminded me why Alaska continues to be one of the world’s most inspiring destinations. The combination of dramatic landscapes and Oceania’s signature luxury created a voyage that felt both adventurous and deeply restorative.
